What Does a VPN Protect?

Your ISP sits underneath much of what you do online because it supplies the connection. A VPN changes what travels visibly across that part of the route.
You may use a bank, company email, Microsoft 365, cloud storage, WhatsApp, Viber, meetings, shopping and streaming during the same day. Those services may have nothing to do with one another, but your ISP normally carries the connection to all of them.
That is why ISP privacy matters even when individual applications already use encryption.
The exact details depend on the protocol and configuration, but a provider can naturally observe information involved in carrying a connection: when traffic is active, how much data is moving, network addresses, timing, some DNS activity and unencrypted traffic.
HTTPS and application encryption protect important contents, but the ISP still occupies the underlying network path.
Without a VPN, your device makes ordinary internet connections through the provider. With a VPN, supported traffic travels inside an encrypted connection from your device to the VPN server.

The provider still gives you connectivity and may know that you are using a VPN, but it does not have the same direct visibility into traffic carried inside the tunnel.
Working from home may feel private, but once traffic leaves the house it crosses the provider’s network. A workday can include customer records, corporate email, internal systems, financial applications and cloud files.
This is one reason VPN technology is a standard part of remote-work security: the company cannot control every employee’s home ISP, hotel or temporary network, so it protects the connection across them.
A VPN provides a common encrypted path underneath many applications. Banking keeps its own secure session; cloud applications keep their own security; WhatsApp and Viber keep their own call encryption; meetings keep their own protections. The VPN adds another layer around the network traffic between your device and the VPN server.
For private or business activity, that broader layer is valuable.
VPNs are often associated with airports and hotels, but the same principle applies at home. Your home Wi-Fi may be trusted while the ISP still carries the connection beyond your router.
Some people prefer to keep a VPN connected routinely so they do not have to decide which individual activity is “sensitive enough.”
Using encryption does not mean you believe your ISP is malicious. Businesses encrypt office traffic, banks encrypt customer sessions and messaging applications encrypt calls because reducing unnecessary trust is good security practice.
The ISP can provide the connection. The VPN can provide the privacy layer.
