For business use, VPNs may also be part of a broader access model. For personal use, they are commonly used to protect traffic on networks the user does not control.
The habits that still matter
Use strong passwords. Keep the operating system updated. Avoid unknown browser extensions. Do not approve suspicious login prompts. Lock the laptop when stepping away.
Practical connection routine
Connect to the local network first, confirm internet access, start the VPN, then open work or sensitive applications. If the connection drops, stop sensitive activity until the VPN status is clear.
Remote workers should avoid assuming that a VPN solves endpoint security. The device still needs normal maintenance and security discipline.
